Explore Kaudulla National Park with Habarana Wild Life Safari and local guide Chathuranga. Enjoy a private jeep safari, encounter majestic elephants, and experience Sri Lanka’s beautiful wilderness.
Safari Overview
Kaudulla National Park is one of Sri Lanka’s most beautiful wildlife destinations, offering an unforgettable safari experience surrounded by open grasslands, peaceful wetlands, and dense woodland. At the heart of the park lies the scenic Kaudulla Reservoir, which provides an important water source for elephants and many other wild animals. Kaudulla forms part of an important elephant corridor connecting with Minneriya and Hurulu Eco Park, allowing herds to move naturally between these areas depending on water, food, and seasonal conditions. During the dry season, large groups of Asian elephants can often be seen gathering near the reservoir, feeding in the grasslands, or moving through the forest. Along the way, you may also encounter deer, wild buffalo, monkeys, crocodiles, colourful birds, and, with luck, the elusive Sri Lankan leopard. Enjoy a private jeep safari with an experienced local guide and discover Kaudulla’s remarkable wildlife in a peaceful, natural setting.

Elephants of Kaudulla
Kaudulla National Park is renowned for its impressive elephant population and is part of an important wildlife corridor connecting Kaudulla, Minneriya, and Hurulu Eco Park. Elephants naturally move between these areas throughout the year, following seasonal changes in rainfall, water levels, and food availability. When conditions bring the herds towards Kaudulla, the open grasslands surrounding the Kaudulla Reservoir become a spectacular place to observe them in their natural environment. You may see large family groups peacefully grazing, mothers caring for young calves, elephants bathing and drinking at the water’s edge, or herds slowly crossing the plains together. The wide, open landscape often provides excellent opportunities for photography and allows you to watch these magnificent animals without the dense vegetation found in some other parks. Elephant movements are naturally unpredictable, so sightings can never be guaranteed, but Kaudulla is regularly an exceptional destination for close and memorable elephant encounters. With an experienced local guide, you can explore the park responsibly while learning about elephant behaviour, family groups, and their seasonal movements.

Best Time to Visit
Kaudulla National Park can be enjoyed throughout the year, but the dry season from July to October is often an excellent time for elephant sightings, as herds move between Kaudulla, Minneriya, and Hurulu Eco Park in search of water and fresh grass. September and October can be particularly rewarding, although elephant movements depend on rainfall and changing water levels each year. Rather than following a fixed calendar, we check the latest local conditions and wildlife movements to recommend the park most likely to offer a great experience on your travel date. Morning safaris usually begin around 6:00 AM, when the temperature is cooler and wildlife is becoming active, while afternoon safaris usually begin around 2:30 PM and continue into the evening. Each safari typically lasts around 3–4 hours, giving you plenty of time to explore the park, observe wildlife, and enjoy the beautiful landscapes around the Kaudulla Reservoir.
